Silver Springs became a state park in 2013 after being operated privately for many years. The transition to a state park helped in the conservation and protection of its natural resources. The Silver River, which is fed by the Silver Springs, is one of the few rivers in Florida that flows north. It is surrounded by lush vegetation and is designated as an Outstanding Florida Waterway.
