Nicaragua is a Central American gem full of surprises. It was my very first international trip. I traveled with my family to explore our ancestry. Years later I was able to visit again for a work assignment. Honestly, I will be happy to come back to explore more of this beautiful country.

Among its many treasures, we are going to go over the city of Masaya in this blog post but since you must likely will have to fly into Managua it will be a good idea to add some time to wander around this city too making it a perfect blend of urban energy, culture and natural wonders.
What To Know Before You Go
Currency
The local currency is the Cordoba (NIO), but the US Dollar is widely accepted in most tourist areas. Just keep in mind if you pay with dollars you might be charged a little higher and must likely will get your change in the local currency, not dollars; be prepared to calculate your currency exchange to avoid any confusions.

Transportation
If you are up for an adventure you can try the local buses (chicken buses). These are very cheap but may be crowded and slow. Remember to bring the local currency in small denominations.
Taxis and ride apps are safer and more comfortable options to move around the city. The most popular ride app is InDriver. If you take a taxi, always remember to confirm the fare before getting into the car.
And of course, the most reliable way to explore is renting a car. I would recommend it since the distance between some attractions can be long.
Safety
Unfortunately, we live in uncertain times (this blog was published in early 2025). It is advised to check and stay updated on local travel advisories. This info can be found here: U.S. Embassy in Nicaragua.
But don’t let the news stop you from traveling and exploring, just exercise safety precautions as to say: avoid walking at night (specially if traveling solo), don’t flash valuables and always use licensed taxis. For an extra peace of mind you can also ask the hotel staff for the latest safety info around the area.
Even though it’s true that Nicaragua has areas with high crime rates, Managua and Masaya are generally safe for tourists.
Best Time To Visit
Nicaragua has two seasons: the dry and the rainy season.
The best time to visit is during the dry season, from November to April. You will enjoy sunny skies, cooler breezes and great conditions for volcano hikes and sightseeing.
May to October is the rainy season, with occasional heavy downpours. Still beautiful, but a little inconvenient.
Where To Stay
Near Managua city center you can find budget-friendly hostels, mid-range hotels and boutique guesthouses. There is also safe neighborhoods like Zona Hippos or Villa Fontana.
If you want to go straight to Masaya or stay a few nights, there are also good options.
Here there is a few of my recommendations:
- Casa San Juan, Managua
- La Posada del Arcangel, Managua
- Elements Hotel Boutique, Managua
- Hostal Libertad, Masaya
- La Table de Apoyo, Masaya
What To Do
Volcan Masaya
Part of the first and largest National Park in Nicaragua, it’s one of the few places in the world where you can drive to the crater of an active volcano and see lava glowing at night!

Volcan Masaya is located about 40 minutes by car from Managua.
You will find plenty of parking, if driving, and a ranger will welcome you at the entrance giving you instructions on how to navigate the area. Here is were you will pay the entrance fee which is about $10USD for foreigners.
The access to the crater is fully paved making it an easy trek. You can also climb a good amount of stairs to get to the top of the cross and see the beautiful landscape from up there.

This active volcano has been an object of fear and reverence for thousands of years.
It’s being said that the cross on top of the volcano was to keep Satan from coming out of the gates of hell and to protect the indigenous Nicaraguans.
The indigenous also believed the volcano was the lair of gods that needed to be appeased by hurling children and virgin girls into the depths.

True or not, it’s an interesting place for sure.
Bring water and a mask in case of strong sulfur fumes.
You can also join a tour if you want some company, I recommend this tour. And if you want to see the glowing lava at night, I recommend this tour.

Catarina Lookout
The Catarina Lookout is a panoramic viewpoint located in the small, charming town of Catarina, just a short drive from Masaya (about 20 minutes) and Granada (about 30 minutes).

It sits on the rim of an ancient volcanic crater and offers a spectacular view of the Apoyo Lagoon (Laguna de Apoyo), which is a clear, blue volcanic crater lake surrounded by lush forest.
From the lookout, on a clear day, you can also spot Lake Nicaragua, Mombacho Volcano and even parts of Granada.
It’s the kind of view that makes you stop, breathe and just feel the beauty of nature.

Many tours to Masaya Volcano or Granada include a stop at Catarina. I recommend this one for the great value.
The lookout area is built with stone terraces, benches and open spaces perfect for photos, picnics and just soaking in the view.

You can also find on the walk up to the lookout local vendors and food stands selling handmade crafts, artisanal hammocks, pottery and wooden items, local snacks like quesillo, tajadas, fresco de cacao and other goodies.
On the weekends, it’s common to see musicians and marimba bands playing traditional music giving the place a more festive vibe.

Masaya Artisan Market
Located in the center of Masaya, often called the “Cradle of Nicaraguan Folklore”.
This market is housed inside a beautifully preserved 19th century fortress with thick stone walls and a charming colonial facade.
Inside, it’s a treasure trove of handmade crafts, textiles and souvenirs created by skilled local artisans from around the country.
It’s not your average market, it’s part shopping experience, part cultural attraction.

If you still have time to spare go check out Parque Central and the beautiful San Jeronimo Church in Masaya.
